What microphone should I use with Dragon Medical Practice Edition?

Although your purchase of a full version of DMPE2 will include an inexpensive "starter" microphone, we strongly suggest you upgrade to a more serious microphone. Most medical providers will appreciate the convenience and functionality of a hand-held USB microphone. The advantage of such a microphone, besides guaranteed compatbility with your software, is a) doing away with the need to wear your microphone and b) the ability to program buttons on the hand-held microphone in such a way to further extend your productivity.

Which microphones do we recommend? In our opinion there are two hand-held USB microphones you should consider: the Philips SpeechMike Premium (LFH3500) and the Nuance PowerMic II. Both of these are highlighted below.

Philips SpeechMike Premium   Nuance PowerMic II

When will Dragon Medical Practice Edition 3 (DMPE3) be released? Should I wait for this?

The current version of Medical Practice Edition is based on the Dragon 12 speech engine. You should know that Dragon 13 was recently released in the "Home" and "Premium" versions. Does this mean that a new version of the Medical Practice Edition is soon to be released. The honest answer is that we don't know. Traditionally, Nuance releases the basic version of Dragon (Home & Premium), followed a few months later by the Professiona version. It is often 4-6 months later before the medical version is released. Considering that the initial version of Dragon 13 was released in August of 2014, we don't expect the medical version (DMPE3) to be released until November or later.

The above having been said, it is highly likely that DMPE3 will be released in the next 6 months and one way you can leverage your current purchase of DMPE2 is to purchase it with "maintenance". What maintenance does is provide you with 24/7 phone and internet support for your current purchase and, most importantly, provide you with free "upgrade assurance". What this means is that if a new version of the Medical Practice Edition is released during the period in which your maintenance is in effect, you will get the upgrade for free. You can do the math, but with the maintenance agreement costing $299 per year and the upgrade outside of a maintenance agreement likely to cost $599, it makes sense to buy maintenance package if you are at least mid-way into the typical 18-month life cycle of each version of Dragon. Being within 6 months of the release, it clearly makes sense to purchase the maintanence if you buy DMPE2 now.

Quick Video Review

Our "Under the Hood" Review:

We have tested the Medical Practice Edition 2 in the real-life environment of academic medical center in New England, where the hustle and bustle (and noise) truly put it to the test. We have used it with a variety of microphones, including the PowerMic II, the Sennheiser ME3, all three versions of the SpeechWare TableMike and the SpeechMic Premium. There are our preliminary thoughts:

  1. Overall, we were extremely impressed with this version and found the many upgrades contributed to a significant improvement in our overall documentation and user experience.
  2. The system requirements are similar to the original Dragon Medical Practice version
  3. Set-up and installation is straightforward. If you are upgrading an existing installation, this is a "smart install" and will easily upgrade your existing user files, including acoustic model, commands, and vocabulary for use in the new version. On a fast computer, an entire clean (new) installation took about 23 minutes, start to finish, not including creation of the first user file.
  4. We are extremely impressed with the accuracy of this edition. Without question, this is the most accurate version of Dragon Medical to be released and it is noticeably more accurate than the previous version.
  5. We like the ability to use the dictation box with transparency to collect (verbally) information while moving through data on the electronic record before transferring into a note in progress.
  6. We very much like the improvement in USB sound device handling and believe that laptop users who are frequently connecting and disconnecting their USB microphone will find this a great improvement.
  7. Although we find the ability to use this version of Dragon with an iPhone or Android phone unlikely to impress the medical community, we have discovered that when set-up in this way our iPhone/iPad adapter can be used to attach almost any analog microphone to your mobile device and this makes your mobile phone a means of turning ANY analog microphone into a wireless microphone. This isn't to say there are some disadvantages to this over a dedicated wireless microphone, but it is, nonetheless, and great option.

  PowerMic II Microphone
If you already own the first edition of Dragon Medical Practice Edition, this is the least expensive way to bring the speed and accuracy of the new product to your PC. You will need to have your original disk available in order to complete the installation/upgrade.   If you are new to Dragon Medical, this is the version to buy. It includes a starter microphone although you would be well served to purchase the version bundled with the PowerMic II or consider one of our other high-quality mics.   This is our recommended combination for the busy medical provider wanting the best accuracy and appreciating ease of use. The PowerMic II is fully integrated with Dragon and this combination is the most cost-effective way to get both.   If you already have Dragon Medical or are purchasing the Upgrade Version alone, this is the hand-held microphone with programmable buttons that integrates with Dragon more so than any other microphone. This is our favorite and bestselling hand-held mic.
