On September 1st Nuance began shipping the updated version of their medical speech recognition software - now to be called the "Medical Practice Edition". Under the Hood Review:
We have tested the Medical Practice Edition in the real-life environment of academic medical center in New England, where the hustle and bustle (and noise) truly put it to the test. We have used it with a variety of microphones, including the PowerMic II, the Sennheiser ME3, and the SpeechMic III. There are our preliminary thoughts:
- Overall system requirements are similar to Dragon 10 and 10.1
- Set-up and installation is straightforward. If you are upgrading an existing installation, this is a "smart install" and will easily upgrade your existing user files, including acoustic model, commands, and vocabulary for use in the new version. On a fast computer, an entire clean (new) installation took about 23 minutes, start to finish, not including creation of the first user file.
- Creating a user profile is slightly different in that the initial sound level and quality check no longer provides a quantitative signal/noise ration (simply a pass/fail)
- We are impressed with the accuracy of this edition. In fact, while we are not recommending it, we set up a profile using the on-board microphone on a laptop and in a quiet setting actually found the accuracy was quite high. When used with our current favorites (Sennheiser ME3 combo and Dictaphone PowerMic II) we see outstanding results.
- We believe that the more straightforward new user set-up, improved tutorials, and availability of the "sidebar" will accelerate the comfort and efficiency of the user new to speech recognition.
